FROM COMMODITY TO INNOVATION
MaxiSalt en SaltForum 2025: a vision that transforms the salt industry
On November 18th, during SaltForum 2025, MaxiSalt CEO Oriol Domènech took the stage to present more than a company update. He shared a vision that is reshaping the future of the salt industry. Together with Salty, the presentation revealed how MaxiSalt has evolved far beyond logistics to become a global force in innovation, technology, and applied research.
It was a story of transformation: from commodity… to a global innovation engine.
A journey that started as a family business
MaxiSalt’s story began in 2009 as a family-run company with a clear mission: combining deep salt expertise with logistics excellence to serve the European market. But the vision quickly expanded.
Today, MaxiSalt handles over 800.000 tons of salt every year. But, as Oriol highlighted, “what defines us isn’t the volume, it’s the purpose behind it”.
Because salt isn’t just a product. Salt is a mineral with the power to drive real change.
Welysys: turning salt into safe water
One of the most significant milestones in MaxiSalt’s evolution was the creation of Welysys Industries, based in Tenerife. Welysys designs and operates skid-mounted chlor-alkali electrolysis plants that enable the local production of chlorine, caustic soda, and sodium hypochlorite.
By producing these chemicals locally, countries reduce logistical risks, strengthen industrial autonomy, create skilled jobs, and, most importantly, secure access to safe drinking water for their countries.
As Salty put it during the presentation, “From salt to safe water, that’s innovation with purpose”.
Welysys is technology with impact: social, environmental, and industrial.
WIN: a connected global ecosystem
Welysys plants don’t operate in isolation. They are all part of WIN (Welysys International Network), a platform that connects facilities worldwide through real-time data, shared best practices, continuous training, and total quality processes.
WIN merges intercommunication, Big Data, and operational excellence, allowing every plant to learn from the others and improve as a collective.
It’s more than a network; it’s a global brain of chlor-alkali innovation.
Salt Innovation Hub: where salt becomes science
As MaxiSalt continued to grow, so did the need for a space dedicated to exploration. Managing global logistics wasn’t enough anymore. It was time to study salt, understand it, and rethink its possibilities.
That’s how the Salt Innovation Hub came to life.
Led by a specialized research team, including Marta, a PhD scientist exploring new applications of salt, the Hub has become a unique R&D center focused on:
- analyzing salt properties and purity,
- developing new processing methods,
- designing sustainable industrial solutions,
- and building bridges between companies, universities, and research institutions.
As Salty said: “Now we don’t just move salt, we study it, shape it, and reinvent it”.
A new chapter for the salt industry
The presentation ended with a clear message: MaxiSalt is no longer just a salt supplier; it’s a driver for innovation.
An organisation that blends experience, adaptability, and curiosity to transform an essential mineral into solutions that benefit people, industries, and the environment.
As Oriol summarized: “We continue supplying salt worldwide, but now we do it with purpose: to make it cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable”.
MaxiSalt’s journey is just beginning, and it’s a journey toward a smarter, more sustainable, and truly innovative future of salt.
As Oriol put it: The Salt Innovation Hub is part of this industry, and part of all of you. Together, we will define what comes next.
