Sand, glass, or filter balls? Which is the best option for your pool?
When it comes to keeping your water clean and crystal clear, choosing the right filter media is key. Today, the most common options are silica sand, filter glass, and filter balls. Each has its advantages, and knowing them will help you make the best choice.
1. Silica Sand: The Classic Option
Sand is what we all know, the typical stuff in pools.
- Filters medium particles (20–25 microns).
- Lasts about 5–6 years.
- Should be washed every 1–2 weeks to keep it working properly.
- It’s cheap and easy to get.
Tip: It works, but over time it compacts and sometimes you need to use more chemicals to keep the water clean.
2. Filter Glass: Cleaner and Greener
Filter glass is recycled glass that works like sand, but better.
- Filters finer particles (down to 15 microns).
- It lasts more than 10 years.
- You don’t need to wash it as often; every 3–4 weeks is enough.
- It’s safe, certified for drinking water, and it’s also environmentally friendly.
Advantage: It keeps the water cleaner longer and you need fewer chemicals. It’s a bigger investment upfront, but it’s well worth it in the long run.
3. Filter Balls: Ultra Efficient
Filter balls are synthetic fibers that filter super fine particles. They can be used in some pools, but not all traditional sand filters are compatible.
- They capture very small particles (5–20 microns).
- They last 3 to 5 years.
- They are easy to clean and are lightweight, which helps the filter.
Fun fact: They tend to be more expensive and filter balls are also used in drinking water treatment plants because they capture very fine particles.
In summary
- Sand: Cheap, easy, and good for getting started.
- Glass: more expensive, but cleaner, more durable, and more environmentally friendly.
- Balls: maximum filtration and minimum maintenance, but not all filters are compatible.
In conclusion, the most universal and safe option for pools is still sand or filter glass.
